Beginner's Herbal Bath Bombs
Learn how to make your own easy and inexpensive bath bombs at home
Prep:15 minutes
Cook: None
Makes: 6–8 small bath bombs
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
½ cup citric acid
½ cup cornstarch or arrowroot powder
½ cup fine Epsom salt
1–2 tablespoons dried herbs (lavender, calendula, chamomile, or crushed rose petals)
Wet Ingredients
2½ tablespoons melted coconut oil or sweet almond oil
½ teaspoon, 10–20 drops,
essential oil (optional, beginner-safe choices: lavender, chamomile, sweet orange)
Witch hazel in a spray bottle (used only to moisten the mixture as needed)
Optional
A few drops of natural colorant (mica or herbal powder)
Instructions
1. Mix dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and salt until completely smooth. Break up all lumps.
2. Add herbs
Stir in the lightly crushed dried herbs. Use small amounts so they disperse nicely without floating in clumps.
3. Combine oils
In a separate small bowl, mix the carrier oil and essential oil. Drizzle into the dry mixture while whisking constantly.
4. Adjust moisture
Spritz with water or witch hazel 2–3 times, mixing after each spritz. Stop when the mixture holds together when squeezed—like damp sand—without fizzing.
5. Mold
Pack the mixture firmly into bath bomb molds or silicone molds. Press tightly so they hold shape.
6. Dry
Let the bath bombs dry uncovered for 12–24 hours until hard. Remove gently from molds.
7. Store
Keep in an airtight container away from humidity. Use within 3 months for best fizz and fragrance.
Best Beginner Herbs (Safe, Low‑Mess, Beautiful)
These herbs behave well in bath water and are gentle on skin:
Lavender buds — calming, classic, easy to work with
Calendula petals — bright color, soothing, non‑staining
Chamomile flowers — soft, aromatic, beginner‑friendly
Rose petals (finely crushed) — romantic, but use sparingly to avoid floating clumps
Avoid: large whole flowers, woody herbs, or anything sharp (rosemary needles, whole hibiscus, etc.).
Tips for Perfect Bath Bombs
If they crumble: mixture was too dry → add 1–2 more spritzes of witch hazel.
If they expand out of the mold: mixture was too wet → add a tablespoon of baking soda.
For sensitive skin: skip essential oils and rely on herbs only.
For color: use tiny amounts of mica or herbal powders (lavender powder, beetroot, spirulina).
